Wendy Skinner of the Signs & Wonders Studio came to ACDSI in 2005 seeking funding to renovate a recently vacated shop in the Fountain Arts Building at 48 Schuyler St. The building, a designated historical landmark, is located in the heart of Belmont’s main business district. The building had not been renovated in 14 years and needed upgraded electric and wiring; flooring; ceiling tile replacement; bathroom fixtures and plumbing; wall repairs; interior storm windows; and a new heating system. New York State SHPO (State Historic Preservation Office) approval was needed for all work plans. Further complications arose when a Member Item promised by the late Senator Pat McKee was put on hold after the Senator’s death. With a great deal of hard work and persistence on Wendy’s part, as well as assistance from ACDSI and ACCORD’s Housing division, the project was approved and the Member Item funding went through. ACDSI provided an additional $15,000 in financing for the project. The rehabilitation work is about to begin on the Fountain Arts building where the Signs & Wonders Studio is located and because of this the business had to relocate. A new location was chosen at 5874 County Road 48 in Belmont. After having received financial assistance in the past, Wendy returned to ACDSI for a $4,000 loan to help with the relocation, which enabled her to continue growing her business with little disruption. |
