Don and Karen Ash visited Angelica for the first time in January 2005. Later that month they stayed for a weekend at the Angelica Inn. It was during that visit that they fell in love with the community and decided to make it their home.

The Angelica Sweet Shop is located at 44 West Main St. in the Park Circle National Historic District on in Angelica, NY.  Established in June of 2005, the shop offers an array of chocolates, truffles and fudge, as well as freshly-baked pies and pastries, coffee and espresso drinks, and locally-produced maple products. Guests can choose hand-dipped ice cream year-round—including Don’s delicious homemade flavors. Young people are delighted by the drawers full of penny candy and other confections. Attractive gifts and gift baskets complete the Sweet Shop’s product offering.  In warm weather, the Sweet Shop hosts live music on the front lawn for all to enjoy.

When the Angelica Sweet Shop first opened, both Don and Karen had full-time corporate jobs, and so the shop was only open on Friday nights and all day on weekends. The business has grown so that it is now open seven days a week at 8:00 a.m., and stays open until 5:00 p.m. Mon-Wed, 9:00 p.m. on Thu-Fri, and 8:00 p.m. on weekends.  Everyone is invited to play Scrabble at the Sweet Shop on Thursday evenings from 6–9 p.m.

Angelica Sweet Shop baked goods can be found at the Houghton College Campus Store and at Harrington’s Market in Belfast. Cartwright’s Maple Tree Inn serves their specialty maple pies and homemade maple walnut ice cream. The Sweet Shop bakes to order, too – from birthday and wedding cakes to a single pie for dinner or a cookie platter for a workplace meeting.

The Ashes recently purchased and restored a second Main Street property – an historic and gracious 1830’s home – and in September 2009 opened Black-Eyed Susan Acoustic Café for lunch (dine-in or delivered).  Since November 2009, the café presents live music every Saturday night, with dinner served from 4:30 -10:00 p.m.  Black-Eyed Susan has room for 75 guests and is handicap-accessible, making it a perfect place for business meetings, showers, private dinners and other events.

Black-Eyed Susan, LLC currently employs twelve part-time staff, all of whom are Allegany County residents.  Don & Karen are committed to being open year-round at both locations, giving local residents and visitors alike two more reasons to visit Angelica any time of year.
